thesalting spotlight | brian sims : ceo & lgbtq+ advocate

brian sims for thesalting

ts: brian, thank you so much for giving us some of your time and energy. please tell us about all the good you do: starting with the purpose of agenda PAC. how long is this organization in existence? and when did you become CEO?

bs: Agenda PAC was founded in 2022 with a laser-focused mission: to counter anti-LGBTQ+ politicians and policies through strategic, impactful campaigns. Unlike traditional LGBTQ+ organizations that emphasize advocacy, Agenda PAC is unapologetically aggressive in its approach—targeting bigotry and hatred directly. I became CEO earlier this year, and it’s been an incredible experience leading a team so committed to protecting equality and justice.

ts: how was your experience canvassing in pennsylvania? what was the biggest lesson learned from the experience? (and THANK YOU btw!!)

bs: Canvassing is both humbling and eye-opening. One of the biggest lessons I learned is just how susceptible everyday Americans are to misinformation and disinformation. It’s a powerful reminder of the importance of clear, truthful communication and the need to combat harmful narratives with facts and empathy.

ts: what specifically do you advise same sex couples who are planning to marry?

bs: Secure your marriage rights now. The current political climate is precarious, and with the next presidential term just around the corner, it’s more important than ever to solidify those protections. Beyond the marriage license, ensure you have supporting legal documents like wills, medical directives, and powers of attorney to safeguard your rights as a couple.

ts: how protected are same sex marriages going forward?

bs: Marriage equality is far less secure than many people realize. The Dobbs decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade, showed us how quickly longstanding precedents can be reversed. There is a very real scenario where the Supreme Court could overturn Obergefell and Windsor, undoing federal marriage equality and recognition of same-sex marriages. We must remain vigilant, elect leaders who will protect our rights, and advocate for legislation that codifies these protections into law.

ts: please share with us the purpose of the tyler clenti foundation? and share a link so our audience can learn more/ explore and contribute.

bs: The Tyler Clementi Foundation is dedicated to ending bullying and fostering acceptance through advocacy, education, and policy. The foundation honors Tyler’s life by creating safe spaces for LGBTQ+ youth and their allies. I encourage everyone to explore and support their work here: https://tylerclementi.org.

ts: what are some actions LGBTQ+ individuals can take to further protect themselves and feel strong, safe, and secure?

bs: Staying connected to community is critical. Find and support organizations that align with your values, know your rights, and don’t hesitate to ask for help when needed. Visibility, while not an option for everyone, can be incredibly powerful—whether it’s voting, volunteering, or simply living authentically in safe spaces.

ts: how do you erase hate in your everyday life?

bs: I believe erasing hate starts with kindness and courage. Speak out when you see injustice, model empathy, and educate yourself and others. It’s about holding firm to our values even in the smallest moments—because change often starts with one brave voice.

ts: please share your favorite spot in NYC and why?

bs: I adore the West Village. Its history as a hub of LGBTQ+ activism feels like a sanctuary to me, and it’s a reminder of how far we’ve come—and how much work remains.

ts: what brings you joy?

bs: Being with loved ones, spending time outdoors, camping, grilling, sitting by a fireplace, and being near water. Those moments of connection with people and nature bring me peace and happiness.

ts: who inspires you?

bs: • David Mixner: A lifelong activist who reminds me of the power of courage.
• Raffi Freedman-Gurspan: A trailblazer for trans rights and representation.
• Julian Cyr: A public servant who demonstrates the impact of compassion in politics.
